I was delighted to find out that the PTO is again collecting redeemable bottles and cans to raise money to support all the worthy things they do for our school. This is a great convenience since the alternative is to take them to the redemption center in Boothbay yourself. Please put your clean empties in the new and attractive container provided in the school yard. Please check that your contributions are redeemable and do not include the trash by mistake. Thanks.
On the eve of the 21st century I am being dragged kicking and screaming into the 20th! I have treated myself to a marginally more modern computer and printer and am about to get rid of the one which came to us second hand in 1984 and really doesn't work any more. It is (or was!) an IBM compatible Leading Edge and might be useful to someone for parts. There is also a Panasonic Dot Matrix printer that works well and I even have the manuals. Anyhow, if interested please get in touch before we bury them at the dump with full military honors.
We stopped in at the Sweet Dreams Bakery and Cafe for breakfast on Friday and for lunch on Saturday. This is very much a family affair so was able to catch up with Marie, her parents, Ron and Ralva Orchard, and her daughter Rachel, all at the same time. These days you can have a cooked breakfast if you wish as well as all Marie's home baked goodies and the luncheon sandwiches are good also. The hours are Wednesday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 7 to 2.
On Monday I stopped at the Town Office and got a tour of the new wing which is going to be wonderful. There will be lots more room and the access will be off Joppa Road with better sight lines than what we have now. The Selectmen will meet in the old space, Donna and Anita will have new and spacious offices and there is even a little bit of as yet unassigned space.
I had a nice chat with Mollie Moore the other day. The Moores' English Tea Room, Crumps is up and running but this year for the first time it will be closed on Sundays to give Mollie and Wells a little more chance to enjoy summer and their garden. Their gift shop has its usual stock of unusual gifts and I plan to do some summer birthday shopping there as always.
The Mother-Daughter Book Club meets at the Library on the third Thursday of the month from 7 to 8 p.m. This week (in fact tonight) the book to be discussed is the young adult fantasy novel Juniper by Monica Furlong. I don't have a daughter but I have been told that it's okay to borrow one or even come on my own; the only requirement is to have read the book. There are copies at the desk, it's an easy read, and the library is open this morning! If this is too short notice, why not plan now to attend next month? The book-to- be-discussed will be announced and available at the library.
By the time this appears in print, school will be out. Please drive slowly and carefully around the island, keeping a sharp look out for children, pets, and people who roller blade in the middle of the road. An accident could spoil everyone's summer! |
