Obituaries
Alton I. Ames, age 73, of Wiscasset, died Monday, June 14 at Maine Veterans' Home in Augusta.
Mr. Ames was born in Burnham, Maine on August 17, 1925, and moved to Vanceboro.
He entered the United States Marines during World War II, and worked at Bath Iron Works as an electrician for many years, retiring in 1983.
He married Erma Glew.
Mr. Ames was a member of the First Congregational Church of Wiscasset and the American Legion of Wiscasset. He was an avid Ham Radio Operator and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Erma F. Ames of Wiscasset; two sons, John Ames and his wife Priscilla of Wiscasset and Brian Ames of Wiscasset; several cousins, nieces and nephews.
A service was held on Wednesday, June 16 at Maine Veterans' Cemetery Chapel in Augusta with Rev. Peg Grzelkowski officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Maine Veterans' Home, Cony Road, RR #7, Box 901, Augusta, ME 04330. Arrangements were by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home in Wiscasset. Elsa M. Hicks, age 93, of Cape Elizabeth died Saturday, June 5 at her residence.
Born on April 21, 1906 in Cleveland, Ohio, she was the daughter of Ernest H. and Elizabeth Marie Junge.
She graduated from Laural High School and Wells College in New York.
In 1946 she married Marvin D. Hicks and they summered on Squirrel Island since that time.
Mrs. Hicks and her husband were active with the Cleveland Symphony, the Cleveland Skating Club, the Western Reserve Historical Society and various musical organizations.
They moved to White River Junction, Vermont from Shaker Heights in 1971 and to Cape Elizabeth in 1983 where she was an active member of St. Alban's Episcopal Church.
She and her husband were active with the Squirrel Island Chapel, the Squirrel Island Preservation Foundation, and the Squirrel Island Fire Department where in 1993 they gave the island a new fire truck.
She was predeceased by her husband on May 22, 1994.
Survivors include one nephews, Stephen G. Junge; and two nieces, Margaret Junge Griffin and Ingrid Junge Shaffer.
A gathering of friends and family was held on Saturday, June 12 at St. Alban's Episcopal Church, Cape Elizabeth with Rev. Audrey S. Delafield officiating.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 10 at the Squirrel Island Chapel with Rev. Audrey S. Delafield of St. Alban's Episcopal Church officiating. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio.

Louise Barr Mackenzie, 91, of Providence, Rhode Island, Professor of English Emerita at Wheaton College, died Wednesday, June 9 at Rhode Island Hospital. She was the wife of the late Superior Court Justice William M. Mackenzie.
Born in Cape May, New Jersey, she was the daughter of the late Oscar and Marie Barr. She lived in Providence for most of her life and was a long-time summer resident of Little Compton and Isle of Springs.
She graduated from Wheaton in 1930 and earned her master's degree at Radcliffe in 1934. Before joining the faculty at Wheaton, she briefly taught at Wellesley College. She completed her education at Brown University, where she studied from 1940 to 1942.
Mrs. Mackenzie was named Professor Emerita at Wheaton in 1971. She was a member of Wheaton's Sesquicentennial National Advisory Committee, served as president of her class in the 1980s, was a member of the editorial board, and was granted the Alumnae Achievement Award in 1978.
She was a member of the Providence Athenaeum, Providence Art Club, Rhode Island Council on the Arts and Central Congregational Church.
Survivors include a son, William M. Mackenzie Jr. of Sherman Oaks, California; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at noon on Tuesday, June 22 in Central Congregational Church, Angell Street, Providence, Rhode Island. Walter S. Reed Jr., 79, died Sunday, June 13 at his home on Oak Street in Boothbay Harbor.
Born February 14, 1920 in Boothbay Harbor, he was the son of Walter S. Sr. and Julia Tupper Reed. He graduated from Boothbay Harbor High School in the class of 1937. He also graduated from the University of Maine. He was an Eagle Scout from the first Boy Scout troop in Boothbay Harbor.
For 27 years, he served in the military, six years with the Navy and 21 years with the Air Force.
Mr. Reed was a former owner of the Lawnmeer Inn on Southport which he ran for 20 years. He was a selectman in Boothbay Harbor for 22 years, and was chairman for eight years. He was a director of the Boothbay Harbor Chamber of Commerce and a trustee of the Boothbay Region Community School District.
He was a member of the American Legion, Seaside Lodge #144 and the Retired Officers Association.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Emily Norton and Ernestine McDonough.
Survivors include his wife, Lorraine LeMay Reed of Boothbay Harbor; two daughters, Judith L. Hurford of Southport and Kim Reed Upham of Boothbay Harbor; two sons, Walter S. Reed III and John D. Reed, both of Boothbay Harbor; and seven grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 18 at the Congregational Church of Boothbay Harbor. Rev. Peter Baldwin Panagore will officiate. Burial will be in Oceanview Cemetery in Boothbay.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Boothbay Harbor Waterfront Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay. John D. Robinson, 52, of Newport, Rhode Island, a commercial fisherman for 30 years and captain of the F.V. Rainbow, died Wednesday, June 9 at home.
Born in Bath, Maine, he was the son of the late Myron A. and Mary Hackett Robinson and the grandson of the late Harry Robinson, who was a Boothbay boatbuilder. He was also the nephew of the late George Robinson of Boothbay Harbor.
Mr. Robinson was an active member of the Newport Elks Club, and All Vets Club, the Fleet Reserve Club and the Friendly Sons of Newport. He was a life member of the Sportsman Club.
Survivors include his companion, Janis Mello of Newport; one son, John D. Robinson Jr. of Sacramento, California; five daughters, Kimberly Robinson and Stephanie Robinson of Sacramento, California, Theresa Robinson and Davina Robinson of Shreveport, Louisiana, and Jenna Robinson of Brooklyn, New York; five sisters, Mary Robinson of Salem, Massachusetts, Sandra Robinson of Bangor, Diane Robinson of Lynn, Massachusetts, Charlene Oden of Gloucester, Massachusetts, and Missy Robinson of New Hampshire; four brothers, Robert Robinson of Washington State, Donald Robinson of Gloucester, Massachusetts, Myron A. Robinson of Randolph, Massachusetts, and Bruce McLaughlin of Portland.
A memorial service was held at the Memorial Funeral Home at Newport, Rhode Island. |
